Ease Into Exercise

"If you don't use it, you lose it," says physical therapist Jennifer Trizuto, who teaches the "Ease Into Exercise" class in San Mateo three times a week. Basic back exercises, very low-impact aerobics, stretching and flexibility are covered in a low-stress format geared for older adults, people recovering from injuries and people who haven't exercised in a long time.

    Why should older adults exercise?
Regular exercise can improve your sleep, digestion, stamina, circulation, muscular strength and the efficiency of your heart muscle as well as decrease your stress level and blood pressure, to name just a few health benefits. But flexibility is probably the most important to seniors, Trizuto said. "As you get older, your body loses elasticity. You might have trouble combing your hair, getting dressed, bending over to put on your socks or getting out of your car. But if you exercise, you'll find yourself moving more easily."

What if I have health problems?
"Ease Into Exercise" is a gradual, progressive, self-monitoring program. Trizuto periodically asks participants to take a 10-second pulse count to make sure they are not over exerting themselves. A written doctor's permission is required to attend.

What do I need to get started?
All you really need is your desire to get fit. But you should wear loose clothing and a pair of soft-soled, flexible shoes and bring a thick towel or exercise mat to class.
