About Wise and Well
The Wise and Well Program provides FREE screening and health education services. The emphasis is on heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes, three conditions that are particularly prevalent and can be “silent” in terms of symptoms. Monthly, the program includes FREE drop-in blood pressure and fasting blood glucose (sugar) screenings and individual counseling. Annually, in September, a FREE comprehensive screening is offered by a team of Mills-Peninsula staff. The screening includes a complete cholesterol profile (total cholesterol, HDL (good), LDL (bad), triglycerides), blood pressure, blood glucose, weight, body mass index calculation and an individual consultation with a nurse or dietitian. An APPOINTMENT IS NECESSARY for the annual screenings and sign-ups begin in August at the individual senior centers.
Enhanced services have included “Brown Bag” screenings where Wise and Well participants meet one on one with a pharmacist to discuss their medications. Nutrition classes have been offered on topics such as the benefit of a low-fat and low sodium diet, portion control, omega-3 and 6, ten top disease fighting foods, importance of adequate fluid intake; eating out and shopping wisely on a budget. A class on emergency preparedness has been conducted with a free 3-day emergency kit giveaway. Pedometers have been handed out as an incentive for exercising.
Wise and Well has been generously funded by San Mateo County Aging and Adult Services since 1994. Additional funds for the program are provided by Mills-Peninsula Health Services and the Peninsula Health Care District.
Please call Senior Focus at 650-696-3660 for a Wise and Well calendar or a schedule of locations and dates.
