Home Diet Instructions
If you are tolerating Stage Two foods well, your surgeon will allow you to advance to the Stage Three Gastric Bypass Diet, usually after the first follow-up visit.
This diet is comprised of soft or pureed foods that are easy to chew and digest. Vegetables must be cooked well so they are soft and mushy. Meats must be ground or pureed in a blender.
On Stage Three, avoid any foods that are difficult to digest such as popcorn, lettuce, raw vegetables, crunchy or citrus fruits, nuts, red meat, fried foods, foods with seeds or spicy foods. Refer to the diet instruction sheets you received from your dietitian.
Follow the Stage Three Gastric Bypass Diet carefully for the first six weeks after surgery while your stomach and small intestine are still healing. You may experience occasional stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea during this time. These problems will soon resolve if you continue to eat small amounts very slowly, chew each bite thoroughly and stop eating as soon as you feel full.
After about six to eight weeks, you may experiment with other foods such as sliced, tender meats, nuts and some raw fruits or vegetables. All foods must be chewed to the consistency of baby food before you swallow them. If a food allowed on the diet list causes you problems even though you ate only a small amount and chewed it thoroughly, wait a week or so and try that food again.
