    Get it while it's fresh!

Summer is the season to enjoy a bounty of fresh fruits and veggies grown right here in San Mateo County.

“With this year’s rains, crops will be as good or better than last year,” says Jack Olsen, executive administrator of the San Mateo County Farm Bureau.

Those crops will yield artichokes, beans (snap, fava and green), berries (blackberries, olallieberries, raspberries and strawberries) potatoes, corn, tomatoes and Brussels Sprouts, among others during the summer months.

The Farm Bureau’s As Fresh As It Gets guide to local produce features produce calendars, information on the health benefits of locally grown foods and where to buy them.

“The guide is available on our Web page and through local libraries,” Olsen said.

He recommends stopping by one of the numerous produce stands in and around Half Moon Bay or visiting your local farmer’s market to buy produce closest to its origin.

“There are many places to find these products,” he said. “Draeger’s, Mollie Stone’s, Whole Foods, coastside stands and farmer’s markets.”

Fish – another local health food – is also available freshly caught along the coast.

“While salmon season has been cancelled again this year, there are plenty of other local fish, including rock cod and striped bass,” Olsen said.

Restaurants also are joining the movement toward local foods by incorporating them into their menus, Olsen said.

“We have almost 700 restaurants participating in the As Fresh As It Gets Program, and 79 were recognized for incorporating local product in their menus last year with our As Fresh As It Gets Award,” Olsen said.

At Sam’s Chowder House in Half Moon Bay, you can order “Braised Giusti Farms Artichokes,” or “Daylight Farms Fairy Tale Pumpkin with Brown Butter.”

“More and more chefs like Sam’s Lewis Rossman are really getting behind fresh and locally grown foods and recognizing our farmers,” Olsen said.
