Where We Are

New hospital nearing completion

Construction on the new Mills-Peninsula Medical Center has passed the 82 percent completion mark, according to Larry Kollerer, project manager.

“We are on track for our target completion in November 2010,” he said. “Exterior architectural details are going up, and interior construction is progressing well.”

The medical center will incorporate the latest technology with electronic patient charting and Internet-based capabilities. Advanced engineering technology provides the highest level of seismic safety available, and the expanded Emergency Department will accommodate 50,000 visits per year – a 42 percent increase in capacity.

The more than 240 private patient rooms will be spacious and family friendly with sleeping accommodations for guests in all medical/surgical, obstetric, intensive care and neonatal intensive care areas.

The finished site will include meditation and healing gardens with walking trails for patients, visitors, employees and neighbors.

Your community hospital in 2010 - Fundraising campaign continues

The new Mills-Peninsula Medical Center – a seven-level, 450,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art hospital – will open its doors in November 2010, providing the same high quality care that’s already put Mills-Peninsula in the top 5 percent of hospitals in the country.

Located at the corner of El Camino Real and Trousdale Drive in Burlingame, the new hospital will be earthquake-safe and wired with the latest technology including electronic patient records.

Its clean, modern architectural design, extensive landscaping, public art, walking paths and fountains will make the new medical center an especially attractive healing environment.

This past summer marked the kick-off of the Mills-Peninsula Hospital Foundation’s community fundraising campaign for the new hospital. The Foundation has taken on the challenge of raising $75 million in philanthropic gift support to help fund the cost of constructing and equipping the new facility.

Project History

A landmark agreement was reached for the creation of the new hospital. The Peninsula Health Care District unanimously approved a new 50-year land lease that will allow Mills-Peninsula to develop a $600 million, state-of-the-art hospital to replace Peninsula Medical Center in Burlingame.

Approval Process and Timeline

The Burlingame Planning Commission and City Council cleared the way for the new hospital in 2004 with a unanimous vote by the Council to approve the Environmental Impact Report (EIR), building design, rezoning issues and a conditional use permit for the project.

The Peninsula Health Care District also unanimously approved a letter of intent that spells out terms of a new 50-year lease agreement to allow Mills-Peninsula to continue to use the publicly-owned land where Peninsula Medical Center now stands.

In August 2006, the community gave its blessing when 93 percent of Peninsula Health Care District voters approved the 50-year lease agreement.

The District includes: San Bruno, Millbrae, Burlingame, Hillsborough, portions of South San Francisco and Foster City, and most of San Mateo.

Ground was broken Nov. 1, 2006. Completion of the project is scheduled for November 2010.
