While under anesthesia administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist, patients receive medications which counteract the effect of opiate narcotics. The procedure reduces withdrawal symptoms from narcotics.

Patients also receive naltrexone, which eliminates the craving for narcotics, and drugs to prevent nausea, diarrhea and muscle aches.
