Aquatic Therapy Program
A unique part of our facility is the full-size therapeutic pool located in the Mack E. Mickelson Arthritis & Rehabilitation Center at Mills Health Center in San Mateo.
The 24 x 82-foot, wheelchair-accessible pool is kept at a warm temperature that is suitable for therapeutic exercise and promotes healing and comfort. Mills-Peninsula offers aquatic therapy as a key component of physical therapy and rehabilitation for adults and children.
Because of the therapeutic benefits of exercising in warm water, our heated pool is often used to assist patients who cannot tolerate a land-based rehabilitation program due to the level of pain they are experiencing, strength limitations or balance and gait deficits. Warm water facilitates increased range of motion and the buoyancy of water reduces impact on painful joints.
Depending on the patient’s comfort level in the water, the patient will work one-on-one with a physical therapist or physical therapy assistant or will participate in a group therapy session. The goal of aquatic therapy is to progress the patient through an individualized treatment plan to an independent or community program.
Caregiver/family training is also available for patients who need assistance getting in and out of the pool and during the exercise session. A physician referral and a physical therapy evaluation are required prior to starting the program. Most insurance plans will cover the service. To schedule an appointment, call (650) 696-4315.
